Hand written Notes in A Digital World

Hand written Notes in A Digital World

We’ve all seen the memes of moms flipping through their planners while on the phone with a friend, only to realize their next availability to hang out is five years from now. It’s funny because it’s true! Life gets so full as we try to meet everyone’s needs and go above and beyond to be a good person. So, what’s a busy mom to do?

In our fast-paced digital world, communication has become instant and often impersonal. But there’s something deeply powerful about a handwritten note—it’s a simple yet meaningful way to live with intention and foster real connection. If we want to thrive amidst the chaos of virtual reality, we must be aware of when and where we enter that world and, more importantly, have an exit strategy.

The Need for Presence

Proverbs 4:25-26 reminds us:
“Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure.”

Take a moment to lift your eyes from your phone. Look around. What’s happening in the room? What’s it like outside?

Hypnosis relaxes the mind, but presence clears our thinking and pulls us out of a digital daze. If we don’t pause for a reality check, we risk living our real, tangible lives inside a fake, virtual reality. Studies show that excessive screen time increases anxiety, depression, poor sleep, and even health risks like obesity. On average, people spend six hours and 37 minutes a day online—that’s more than a full workweek spent in the digital world!

So how do we step away from this cycle? The answer lies in intentional living.

The Art of Letter Writing

Our exit strategy from the digital haze has to be a conscious decision to not reach for our phones. Instead, we need to fill that time with something meaningful—something that fosters real connection. Enter: letter writing.

It’s simple, accessible, and, best of all, powerful. Sending a handwritten card doesn’t require much time or effort, but the impact is profound. Here’s why:

1. A Handwritten Note Says, “You Matter.”

When you take the time to write a note, you’re telling the recipient they are worthy of your attention and care. In today’s world, where happy mail is rare, a physical letter can shake someone (and you!) out of the digital stupor. It sparks joy—like the childhood excitement of slipping an envelope into the mailbox and raising the flag.

2. It Grounds You in the Present Moment

Writing a letter is an act of mindfulness. When you sit down to write, create a peaceful atmosphere—light a candle, sip some tea, or simply take a deep breath. This moment of presence allows you to reflect on the recipient, their role in your life, and the purpose behind your message. You’re connecting with them before they even read your words!

3. Receiving a Letter is a Gift

A handwritten note has a way of making us feel seen, special, and valued. Studies show that receiving a personal letter can reduce feelings of depression and isolation while boosting overall well-being. It strengthens relationships and reminds us we’re not alone.

4. It Leaves a Lasting Impact

Unlike digital messages that get lost in the noise, a physical letter becomes a keepsake. Choosing a beautiful blank card or one with an inspirational quote allows your recipient to treasure it for years. Your words of encouragement can be revisited whenever they need a boost—during a sleepless night, a difficult day, or a moment of self-doubt.

As you reflect on this practice, I leave you with Hebrews 10:24-25:
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

That’s powerful stuff.
Remember, no matter what season you’re in, God is with you, nurturing your growth. Let’s cultivate deeper connections—one handwritten note at a time.

And if you're ready to start deeply cultivating all the aspects of your life, I'd be honored to walk along side you.
